July, 2010

Tuesday, July 6th—it’s our theme night at Frugal Foodies, and since it’s so close to the 4th of July, we’re going to feature American food, whatever that might be.  Actually, when we did Cuisines of the World, A-Z, a few years back, a lot of people were skeptical when the letter U and the United States came up.  But we had some delightful dishes, mostly from the South, and the food was a hit.  So we may revisit some of those and add some treats from California, Pennsylvania, Hawaii.  Who knows, but it’s sure to be good!

Tuesday, July 13th—it’s Julie’s Vegan Night, and I must confess that I don’t have the list of menus here in Vegas where I am on work.  But everyone loves Julie’s Vegan Night, especially vegans.  And the non-vegans like being surprised at how good and filling all things vegan can be.  So expect some tasty treats, perhaps some surprises, and in general a night of all things vegan.

Tuesday, July 20th—it’s our Guest Chef Night, and July will feature a first-timer.  Not only is she a good cook, but she’s my number one Scrabble partner.  So come on out to taste the delightful menu that Navina Khanna will be putting together for us, and perhaps learning some really good Scrabble words.  Navina specializes in all things super healthy, has been very active in Oakland’s fight for access to affordable and nutritious ingredients, and makes many dishes that are sure to be found in the finest Berkeley co-ops.  She’s still not sure what we’ll be making that day, but I can guarantee that not only will the food be good but you’ll learn and smile a lot if you choose to come out on this night.

Tuesday, July 27th—the last Tuesday of July and that means Special Guest Ingredient Night.  What’s in season?  There’s so much to choose from, but we’re going to go delicacy and feature figs.  I used to hate figs because I couldn’t get the horrid taste of Fig Newtons out of my head, but I’ve since come to really love them.  Fresh figs especially, and this is when they are at the ripest.  So we’ll have a whole lotta California/Mediterranean/Middle Eastern dishes that you’re sure to enjoy, all featuring figs and many featuring their delectable sidekick, cheese!
